MORE THAN A MUSEUM

Students need real-life inspiration and opportunities to learn. Our STEM programs help introduce them in an open and engaging learning space.

Many children don’t have the opportunity to visit a museum and may never realize their interest in STEM careers. Our goal is to give 30,000 Sacramento kids a STEM Experience— regardless of socio-economic background. We hope to inspire our future leaders to pursue a career in future STEM industries!

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

Students

“I loved exploring the different airplanes. I learned that some of the engines were just like ones that helped shoot rockets into space! I want to show my friends the green plane outside with a bunch of missiles on it.”

—Daphne, age 10

Educators

“I learned much more than I expected when I went to this museum on several occasions. I like how some of the exhibits are interactive for people to learn even more and retain what they learn better. The space is well organized and the fleet of airplanes is impressive. This is a great museum to attend for kids and adults alike and has something to offer everyone! The volunteer docents are also very kind and knowledgeable.”

—April B.

Families

“What a great, kid-friendly place to bring the family. The variety of aircraft is amazing!”

—Shelly V., parent

Enthusiasts

“Absolute 5 star rating on the Aerospace Museum of California. It the the most
complete and comprehensive collection of military planes, early flight, rockets and commercial aircraft and interactive activities I’ve ever seen. There is an indoor hanger area with lots of learning displays, actual rockets, flight trainers and simulators. Outdoors there are actual planes you can go into and really study. Not to be missed!”

—Lawrence D.

Our History

The Museum was founded in 1982 as the McClellan Aviation Museum, a part of the US Air Force museum system. After McClellan Air Force Base closed in 2001, the community rallied to keep the Museum open.

The Museum relocated to a new facility on McClellan Park creating a large exhibit hall, classrooms and a 4-acre air park in 2007. The name was changed to the Aerospace Museum of California to expand the mission to display commercial and private aircraft as well as aircraft used by all branches of the Armed Forces. Most notably our new name more accurately reflects the Sacramento region’s contributions to aviation and aerospace. The Museum’s current STEM education mission was born.

Our Staff

❝ My dream of becoming a pilot in the United States Air Force started with a visit to the Aerospace Museum of California. It was Open Cockpit Day at the museum, which allowed me to get up close and personal with the aircraft. While sitting in the cockpit of the A-10 Thunderbolt II, one of the volunteers told me about the brave female pilot that flew it through combat and back to safety.

He then proceeded to ask what I wanted to do when I grew up. It was in that moment that my wide-eyed sixth grade self replied, “an A-10 pilot, of course!” This began a ten year journey to where I am now—a pilot select in the United States Air Force. I’m fortunate to be able to work part time at a place I love while I pursue my dream! ❞
